Many people in the UK are interested in the possibility of moving into a self-build, according to the Building Societies Association (BSA).
The group believes "consumer demand is there" but warned that a number of obstacles are stopping them from pursuing this option.
However, the BSA noted that the government is working to bring down these barriers and make self-building a more viable option for the public.
Paul Broadhead, Head of Mortgage Policy at the group, commented: "The government has committed to maximise access for self-builders to land which is being released as part of its accelerated land disposals programme and to require local authorities to take positive steps to facilitate this form of building."
